ABOUT CIVIL SERVICES
The Indian Civil Service serves as the backbone of India's administrative setup and carries great respect and responsibilities. India's best brains vie for entry into the Indian Civil Services as officers. Even though corporate jobs may offer more attractive salaries and perks, a majority of youngsters and their parents still crave entry to the prestigious Indian Civil Services through competitive examinaitons held by Union Public Service Commission. The very fact that a sizeable share of top posts every year in the civil services exams are bagged by professionals from various streams, shows that the IAS is still the dream job for many.

SERVICES FOR WHICH SELECTION IS MADE
All India Services Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, Indian Police Service

Group - A Includes Indian P. & T. Accounts & Finance Service, Indian Audit and Accounts Service, Indian Customs and Central Excise Service, Indian Defence Accounts Service, Indian Revenue Service, Indian Ordnance Factories Service (Assistant Works Manager, non-technical), Indian Postal Service, Indian Civil Accounts Service, Indian Railway Traffic Service, Indian Railway Accounts Service, Indian Railway Personnel Service, Posts of Assistant Security Officer in Railway Protection Force (RPF), Indian Defence Estates Service, Indian Information Service (Junior Grade)

Group - B Railway Board Secretariat Service ( Section Officer’s Grade) , Armed Forces Headquarters Civil Service (Section Officer’s Grade), Customs Appraisers’ Service, Delhi, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, lakshadweep, Daman & Diu and Dadra & Nagar Haveli Civil Service, and Police Service, Puducherry Civil Service. Besides these, UPSC also conducts examinations for Indian Economic / Statistical Service, Indian Geological Service, Indian Forest Service, Central Police Forces Service etc.

AGE LIMIT

  1. A candidate must have attained 21 years and not be over 32 years on August 1 of the year of examination.

  2. The upper age limit is relaxed in specific cases as mentioned below:
  • upto a maximum of 5 years if the candidate belongs to SC/ST.
  • upto a maximum of 3 years if the candidate belongs to Other Backward Classes.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY

  • A degree of any of the Universities
  • Candidates who have appeared or intend to appear for the qualifying examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear for the Preliminary Examination. All such candidates who qualify to appear for the Civil Services Main Examination must produce proof of having passed the said examination along with their application for the Main Examination

NUMBER OF ATTEMPTS
A maximum of 6 attempts is permitted to every candidate and 9 to those belonging to Other Backward Classes. There is however no limit on the number of attempts in the case of SC/ST candidates.

JOB PROSPECTS
Depending upon his/her rank , a candidate is services such as the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) , Indian Police Service (IPS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and other service of Group A and Group B. The civil service posts offer executive powers. Promotions in the cadre are time bound and the increase in privileges is automatic. Selected candidates are first put through training for short period. They are usually sent to an academic staff  college associated with the service to which they are allocated. The greatest advantage of civil service is job security. Special perks include subsidised accommodation , telephone and transport facilities , medical benefits , leave travel concession , etc. The post-retirement benefits are also commensurate with the status of civil service. Last but not the least is the immense satisfaction one derives at being able to serve the community and participate in the development process of the country

SALARY COMPENSATION
The Government of India has provided relatively high salary scales civil service and the scales are revised from time to according to Pay Commission Recommendations.
